West Cache Creek Overlook

"West Cache Creek Overlook"
oil on linen panel
12x16
$160

We have been hiking many times in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge but had never before taken the short hike to this overlook.  On our last trip to the refuge, we stopped at a very small parking spot to take the walk over the hill and were amazed at this view of the river.  It was late in the afternoon and the trees were alight with the afternoon sun while the shadows provided some dramatic contrast.

Donkey and Colt

These donkeys are in the field near our neighborhood.  Every year there is a new foal born and I love to take photos of the new arrival.

Reflections

"Reflections"
oil on linen panel
8x10
$140

This is a small detail from a photograph I took several years ago of a stream in the state of Washington.  Moving water with reflections is a challenge to paint!

Two Does

"Two Does"
oil on linen panel
12x16
$175

This is a painting of two does I photographed in the wildlife refuge many years ago.  I had painted them years ago and decided to repaint the same scene to see if I my style of painting has changed.  The photo was taken in the campground.  There is a herd of deer that hangs around the campground hoping to be fed.

The Hogan

"The Hogan"
oil on linen panel
12x16
$150

On a trip through Canyon de Chelley, I took a photo of this Navajo hogan.  I enjoyed painting the big old tree with the canyon colors peeking through the branches.

Old Truck

"Old Truck"
oil on linen panel
12x16
$170

This old rusty truck is located in Canon City Colorado.  I took a photo of it this summer.  I left out some of the background in the photo--namely a trailer and the surrounding trash.

Light and Shadow

"Light and Shadow"
oil on linen panel
10x20
$190

I took a photo of this scene one late afternoon in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.  I added the deer from another photo.  I loved painting the cool shadows in this one.

Fleeing Elk

"Fleeing Elk"
oil on linen panel
11x14
$160

We saw a herd of elk one late afternoon in Estes Park, but I didn't have my camera with me.  So Al took some photos with his cell phone.  Even though there wasn't much detail in the pictures, the lighting was really beautiful!  This cow was fleeing from our car.  Estes Park is a great place to take elk photos, as the elk are very plentiful and unafraid of humans.

"Bison Portrait"
20x16
oil on canvas panel
sold

I didn't really get this close to this bull when I took his picture.  I have a nice long lens on my camera, so I'm able to get good close-up shots and stay alive.  I had painted this bison previously on an 11x14 sized canvas and decided I'd like to try a much larger one.  I enjoyed painting this one!

Riders in the Canyon

"Riders in the Canyon"
oil on linen panel
12x16
$175

This was painted from a photo I took one morning when Al and I took a hike into Canyon de Chelly.  The weather that morning was gorgeous and the lighting was really beautiful.  Just when I was about to take a photo of this scene, a pair of horseback riders rode through.  I couldn't have planned it any better!  Canyon de Chelly is really worth seeing!  It's a painter's paradise!

Moose in Sprague Lake

"Moose in Sprague Lake"
oil on linen panel
16x20
$175

On a recent trip to Estes Park, Colorado, we went for a short hike around Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park.  There was a moose in the middle of the lake who posed for photos for quite awhile.  You can see how shallow this lake is; it was a perfect depth for him to wade in and feed on the vegetation.  We were told by someone from the area that moose are very seldom seen in the Park.

Graylight

"Graylight"
oil on linen panel
16x12
$165

While visiting my best friend, Renee, in Mississippi, we spent some time with her daughter, Audrey, watching her groom and exercise her horse, Scarlet, who is an Arabian- Mustang cross.  The name, Scarlet, didn't seem to fit this painting, so Renee suggested the name Graylight.  She has always been better than I am at naming paintings.

Longhorns in the Canyon

"Longhorns in the Canyon"
oil on linen panel
16x20
sold

This is an interesting area in the Wichita Mountains that my best friend and I explored the last time she visited.  An art patron from Dallas mentioned to me that he was fascinated by this area and inquired whether or not I had any paintings of this scene.  He remarked that he thought it would make an interesting painting if it included longhorn cattle.  This painting is the result of that idea.

Last Light on Burford Lake

"Last Light on Burford Lake"
oil on linen panel
10x20
sold

I painted this from a photo I took many years ago in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.  This is a stream running into a small lake named Burford Lake.  I had painted this scene six years ago and decided to try painting it again to see if my painting skills have improved.  It is quite a bit better than the former version.  It's good to know I'm improving in my painting.  I don't compare my paintings with other artists's work; instead, I compare my later paintings with earlier paintings.  My goal is to improve as a painter.

Curious Cow

"Curious Cow"
oil on linen panel
12x16
$175

While driving through the Mississippi countryside with my best friend, Renee, I spotted this broken down old barn with this cow.  She was most interested in the strange person taking her picture and posed quite nicely for the photo.

New Calf

"New Calf"
oil on canvas panel
12x16
$175

On a recent visit to Mississippi, I took a photo of this cow and calf.  My girlfriend was driving through the countryside when I spotted these two.  She pulled over for me to take several photos.  The grass was a bright spring green, and I really liked the bushes in the background.

Bath Lake

"Bath Lake"
oil on linen panel
12x16
sold

This is a scene from a local town, Medicine Park.  This small town is right outside the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, and was a very popular resort in the early 20th century.  This area of the river that runs through the town is called Bath Lake and was a popular swimming place for locals and visitors to the area.  As you can see from this painting, it is still popular with the locals.

Bison Calf

"Bison Calf"
oil on linen panel
6x8

This is a very small painting of a bison calf.  Several years ago, we were driving through the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge when we drove past a herd of bison with small calves.  I wish we had had a movie camera, for they ran alongside the car for quite a ways.  The herd stopped right at a parking lot in front of the prairie dog enclosure, so we were able to park there and take numerous photos of the mothers and calves.  This painting is of one of the calves we saw that day.

"Spotted Calf"
oil on linen panel
12x9

I took several photos of this colorful calf on the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

Rugged Rocks

"Rugged Rocks"
oil on linen panel
12x16
$175

This is a painting of a scene in Estes Park, Colorado.  We camped near this lake several years ago, but the campground was not there the last time we visited the area.  I really enjoy painting rocks; its one of my favorite subjects!

Peek-a-Boo

"Peek-a-Boo"
oil on linen panel
12x16
$180

I named this painting Peek-a Boo because the one foal is peeking at the other one.  I took photos of these horses several months ago.  This is only the second painting I have done of horses.  It was a challenge, but I really enjoyed it.

Canyon de Chelly Overlook

"Canyon de Chelly Overlook"
oil on linen panel
12x16
$175

I love to paint Canyon de Chelly because of the dramatic cliffs and the gorgeous colors.  I took a photo of this scene late in the day when the shadows were dramatic and the colors intense.  It was a lot of fun to paint!

Protective Mama

"Protective Mama"
14x11
oil on linen panel
$160

The colors in the calf did not translate well in the photo.  The actual colors are more muted--not so blue.  It would be nice if the photo always looked just like the painting, but that never happens.  I took the photo of these two on the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.  They were part of a herd that crossed the road right in front of me.
