Nursing Calf

"Nursing Calf"
oil on linen canvas

This was painted from a photo I took several weeks ago in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.  It was taken in the morning, providing interesting light.  I love painting scenes and animals in  dramatic lighting.  This week, we spent several days in the Refuge and I was able to take some very interesting photos.  I can hardly wait to paint some of them.

Along the Yellowstone

On our receint trip to Yellowstone, I took many pictures of a bison herd by the Yellowstone River.  This one was very large and muscular.   I enjoyed painting him against the backdrop of the river.

Don't worry, I took this photo from the car with a telephoto lens on the camera.  I am very careful around bison and longhorns.  I enjoyed painting this one.

Grazing Buffalo

"Graziing Buffalo"
oil on canvas board
9x12
sold
I am experimenting with a new canvas surface.  I have tried acrylic primed and oil primed canvas and was not entirely pleased with either surface.  So I ordered a few linen canvases primed with alkyd.  I must say I love this surface to paint on.  The paint glides on easily, but with the control that is lacking with oil primed canvas.  This buffalo was so easy to paint.  I usually struggle with painting wildlife, but this one was a joy to paint.
