Play of Light

"Play of Light"
oil on linen panel
12x14

The reference I used for this painting was a photo taken early one morning of Gondola Lake in Medicine Park, Oklahoma.  The trees in the background were lit up with the light and the geese in the foreground were posing very nicely.

My reference for this painting was a photo I took at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge last month.  My girlfriend, Renee, and I had gone out to the Treasure Lake area in the early morning and  glimpsed several elk crossing the river and running over the hills on the other side.  This one stopped for a second and posed for me.

Light and Shadow

"Light and Shadow"
oil on linen panel
10x20
sold
I took a photo of this scene on a recent trip to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.  I added the deer from another photo.  I am always inspired by strong light and shadows--I especially like dramatic backlighting.  This one was fun to paint!  I used a combination of viridian green and alarizin crimson for the colorful shadows.

View From Quanna Parker Dam

"View From Quanna Parker Dam"
oil on linen panel
12x16
sold

This scene is painted from a vantage point on top of Quannah Parker Dam on the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.  It was late afternoon, and the sun cast warm light over the hills, causing interesting shadows.  This one was very difficult to paint; the colors were a real challenge.  I'm not sure I am finished with it.  I may have to go back and work on it some more after I look at it awhile.  On a recent trip to the Refuge, my girfriend and I took many great photos of deer, elk, and the landscape.  I have so many good photos to work from I don't know where to start!  I love to paint the Wichita Mountains!  We have spent so many happy hours there, camping and hiking!

Nursing Calf

"Nursing Calf"
oil on linen canvas
12x16
sold
This was painted from a photo I took several weeks ago in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.  It was taken in the morning, providing interesting light.  I love painting scenes and animals in  dramatic lighting.  This week, we spent several days in the Refuge and I was able to take some very interesting photos.  I can hardly wait to paint some of them.

sold

I painted this from a photo I took on the bridge over the river near the Teluride city park.  I have painted this scene twice before on 8x10 and a 9x12 canvases.  I knew it would be a difficult painting and wanted to try it on smaller canvases before attempting it in a larger version.  I'm not entirely  pleased with the mountians in the background, but I don't know how to fix them at this time.  Maybe the solution will occur to me later.

The Fisherman

"The Fisherman"
oil on linen panel
10x20
sold
When visiting Yellowstone I glimpsed this scene as we drove past and asked Al to stop and let me take a picture.  After I got out of the car I saw the fisherman.  What a beautiful place and day to fish!  This scene was quite difficult to paint.  The reflections in the water were a real challenge!  But the challenging paintings are the ones that teach you the most.

Along the Yellowstone

"Along the Yellowstone"

On our receint trip to Yellowstone, I took many pictures of a bison herd by the Yellowstone River.  This one was very large and muscular.   I enjoyed painting him against the backdrop of the river.

Avalanche Creek

"Avalanche Creek"
10x20
oil on linen
sold
On our recent trip to Glacier National Park, my husband and I, along with friends, hiked along Avalanche Creek.  What a beautiful hike that was--breathtaking!  I had such an enjoyable time painting this one.  The movement of the water was a challenge to capture, but exciting to paint.  I took quite a few photos on our trip through Yellowstone, Glacier, the Tetons, and the Wind River area.  This is the first one I've painted since our return.

A few years ago, on a trip to Zion National Park, Al and I hiked up to the top of Angel's Landing.  This painting was done from a photo I took at the top.  That was quite a hike, but the view was well worth it!  I'm not sure we would be able to hike that one again.  I love the colors in the national parks in Utah!  They're such fun to paint!

The Virgin River

"The Virgin River"
oil on linen
9x12
sold
I have painted this scene of the Virgin river near Zion Nation Park a few times in the past and have never been fully satisfied with the results.  So I tried another small one of this scene.  I'm still not really satisfied with it, so I will probably try try again.

Spring Calf

"Spring Calf"

I painted this one several years ago and decided to paint it again.  I started the painting a month ago before our trip to Glacier National Park and finished it yesterday.  I took many photos of landscapes and wildlife on our trip through New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana that I plan on using for new paintings.

Spring Greens

"Spring Greens"
12x16
oil on linen panel
sold
I painted this scene from a photo I took near Gunnison, Colorado last year.  When we travel through that part of the country, we often stop at a rest stop before we get to Blue Mesa Reservoire and take a walk along the river.  The photo of this scene was taken from the bridge that crosses a stream that flows into the river.  It is such a beautiful area--this painting really takes me back!

Autumn Colors

"Autumn Colors"
10x20
oil on linen panel

I took a photo of this scene in the Wichita Mountains years ago and have painted it several times.  It's one of my favorite scenes to paint because of the variety of color.  This time I decided to paint it in this horizontal format.

Burford Lake

This painting was painted from a photo taken of a lake in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.  Few people know the name of this small lake.  I had to look it up on a map in order to name it.  I enjoyed painting the rocks and the reflections in the water.

I like painting cows with interesting spots and patterns.  This is a longhorn heifer in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

The Old Plantation

"The Old Plantation"
12x16
oil on linen board

This is an old building in Medicine Park, Oklahoma.  I took the photo I painted this from several years ago before the building was restored.  It was a hotel at one time and is now a restaurant and bar.  Most of the buildings in this old town are built of cobblestones.  The town was a popular place for vacationers to come in the early part of the last century.

The Lone Hiker

"The Lone Hiker"
oil on linen panel
10x20
$165
I have painted this scene twice before--the first time in watercolor and years later in oils in a 12x16 size.  I decided to try it once again in a long format.  I liked this size much better, and the linen canvas was much easier and freer to paint on.  It was painted from a photo I took years ago of my husband hiking in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.  I am always lingering behind him taking myriads of photos.  He has to be very patient hiking with me.

"Thelma and Louise"

"Thelma and Louise"
oil on canvas board
10x20
sold
I finished this painting this afternoon of two Longhorn cows.  I loved painting the brindle cow--she was a challenge.  I took a photo of these two several weeks ago at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.  The herd was quite a ways away, but thanks to my trusty camera with its long lens, I was able to get some great photos.
I spent last weekend at the Downtown Edmond art show and sold twelve paintings.  I guess its probably time to raise my prices a bit.  I have kept them low because of the economy; but I am building up a clientel now.

This is a painting of the entrance to a local restaurant here in Altus.  I had painted this scene years ago and decided to paint it again.  The second one was much better than the first.  Its good to know my paintings are improving.  I really enjoy painting flowers and foliage!

Following Mom

sold
The second painting was painted two years ago, and hadn't sold, so I decided to repaint it.  I'm still not exactly thrilled with it, but I think the colors on the mother are better than the original.  And the colors are warmer.

Bison Portrait

"Bison Portrait"

Don't worry, I took this photo from the car with a telephoto lens on the camera.  I am very careful around bison and longhorns.  I enjoyed painting this one.

Palo Duro Colors

"Palo Duro Colors"
oil on canvas board
12x16
$165
I took a photo of this scene on the edge of our campground in Palo Duro Canyon years ago.  The last rays of the sun were lighting up the canyon walls.  The contrast of the warm and cool colors was fun to paint.  I love to paint the colors found in Palo Duro--so many juicy reds and purples!  I had painted a smaller version of this scene years ago.  I like painting the same scene years later.  It enables me to see the progress I've made as a painter.

A View Through the Trees

"A View Through the Trees"
oil on linen canvas board
9x12
sold
I have painted this Colorado scene in the past, but I decided to try painting it on alkyd primed linen canvas rather than acrylic primed canvas.  What a difference!  I love this canvas!  I am scheduled to teach a oil painting class in a few weeks and I wanted to find a subject that I could do a painting demonstration for the students in one fairly short session.  I think this will work.

This doe is one of the campground deer that frequent the Doris campground in the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge.  It was late in the afternoon when I took photos of this doe and the rest of her herd.  I enjoyed painting the warm colors and the interesting shadows.

Canyon de Chelly

"Canyon de Chelly"
oil on canvas board
10x20
$130
I just finished this painting of a scene in Canyon de Chelly in the Four Corners area.  Al and I have visitied there twice and plan to go back.  There is only one trail from the top of the canyon and this is a photo taken after our hike into the canyon.  You are not allowed to drive your vehicle into the canyon.  The last time we were there we took a tour, but it was hard to take photos while barreling from place to place on a big truck.  So the next time I think we will hire a private driver and then I can stop anywhere I want to take photos.

Nolan House

"Nolan House"
oil on linen canvas board
10x20

I just finished this painting of a house that a couple in Altus commisioned me to paint.  Their house used to be near the base runway and was purchased by the base and torn down because of the excessive noise from the airplanes taking off and landing.

oil on canvas panel
12x16
sold

This is a painting I just finished of the dam in Medicine Park, Oklahoma.  I recently took a photo of this scene with several kids fishing from the dam.  It was such a beautiful day and the lighting was perfect!  I had a good time painting this one and enjoyed using the new alkyd primed linen canvas.  It's a joy to paint on!

House in Mecicine Park

12x16
oil on canvas board
sold

I did this painting for a couple I met at the Medicine Park Art Walk I attended this year.  They commisioned me to do a painting of their house in Medicine Park.  This one was rather difficult because of the cobblestones in the walls of the house.  Most of the houses in the little town of Medicine Park are built of cobblestones.  It is a very quaint little town with a lot of history and certainly worth visiting!
